Mums Off Duty, Car and Tyre Care

As a busy mum, there are lots of things you need to look after in addition to your day to day chores. If you regularly drive your kids to school, or act as a taxi driver chauffeuring your little ones to and from after-school clubs, looking after your car and making sure it is safe to drive is also an important thing to prioritise on your to-do list.

Unpredictable weather like heavy rainfall, or snow in winter, means you need to pay extra attention to your car care to make sure it’s safe to drive in all weather conditions. Here are a few tips to help you with your car maintenance and keep your ride in tip top condition.

First of all, you need to look at whether your windscreen is free of scratches and check that there are no tiny cracks or fractures in the windscreen. Even tiny cracks can eventually worsen over time and become a much bigger problem and more expensive to repair, so it’s best to sort these out straight away.

Make sure your wipers are in good condition as well. If they’re not clearing the screen, check to see if they’re clean – they may well have collected some debris that you’ll need to manually remove. If they’re worn down, then it’s time to get them replaced.

This part is really important – make sure you check your tyres regularly for wear and tear. Two of the key things you should keep in mind when monitoring your tyre performance is checking air pressure levels and tread depth. A balanced amount of air pressure in tyres will prevent your tyres from getting damaged when travelling over speed bumps or rough road surfaces. Not to mention the hundreds of potholes in our UK roads!

Tyre tread depth protects it from being damaged. According to UK laws tread depth should be a minimum of 1.6mm to keep your tyre safe from sharp materials. If you are looking for tyres check out DAT Tyres website, they stock a wide variety of good quality tyre brands.

I spend a lot of time cleaning our house but the car, not so much! Wash the exterior and keep windows, headlights and rear lights clean and clear. And don’t forget the inside – vacuuming your car mats once or twice a month is important too. If you wash or vacuum your mats regularly, your car will smell better and you’ll stop dirt spreading around your car’s interior.

Hopefully these handy car care and tyre maintenance tips will help you keep on top of your car care – especially in this unpredictable winter weather!
