Review: Broadway Gallery Cafe Bar in Letchworth

by Natalie

I’ve passed by the entrance to the Broadway Gallery Cafe Bar in Letchworth town centre many times but never ventured in until today. What a hidden gem! Climb to the top of the stairs (there is a lift if you need it) and you enter the Gallery Cafe Bar, and just beyond is the new Broadway Gallery, currently housing the ‘Alternative Letchworth’ exhibition.

The cafe is bright, airy and modern, with windows looking out over the Leys Square fountains. There is even a shiny, white grand piano to admire. The room was toasty warm, with the radiators cranked up to full, which felt amazing after being outside in the bitter cold.

The lunch menu includes sandwiches, paninis and homemade soup. I ordered the goats cheese sandwich with sun blush tomatoes and chutney. It was served with a generous helping of salad and it was delicious. The soup of the day was leek and potato, and was served with toasted sourdough.

Hot drinks include all the usual suspects as well as a ‘chocolate and coconut tea’ special. I didn’t try it but please let me know in the comments below if you have! The hot chocolate was beautifully frothy and the coffee was picture perfect (and tasted good). There is also a selection of beers and wine.

Free wi-fi is available, you just need the password which is written on the menu board behind the counter.

We briefly checked out the ‘Alternative Letchworth’ exhibition which was really interesting, and I do intend to return and spend more time there. I spotted a children’s table at the far end of the gallery, so little ones can amuse themselves while you peruse. This particular exhibit runs until Sunday, 19 February, and admission is free.

The Gallery Cafe Bar is open Wednesday to Saturday from 10am-5pm, and Sunday from 10am-4pm.

Please check the Broadway website for all the details.
