Confidence means feeling sure of yourself and your abilities, and helps us feel ready for life’s experiences. It makes you more likely to move forward with opportunities, relationships and all of the best parts of life!
This is why it is so important for you to instil confidence in your child from a young age. So how do we do this?
We’ve teamed up with Manor Lodge, a top independent prep school in Hertfordshire to give us some tips and tricks to help our children develop their confidence.
Take a step back
Whatever age your child is, taking a step back and letting them make their own decisions can be tough. But it is necessary!
Let your child take risks, solve problems and make their own choices. After all, how can you grow confidence in someone when all they have ever known is to follow orders?
Praise – but try not to overdo it
Praise is fantastic, but only when it’s earned.
Be careful not to overdo it for the sake of it as it can start to dilute the meaning behind it and your child will take it for granted.
You need to teach your children that hard work and great achievements will be recognised.
Help your child develop their goals

Speak to your children about their life aspirations and goals from a young age.
You can expect their dream job to change throughout the years, but it is making them think about the future and helping them to understand they can be whatever they want to be with some hard work and dedication.
At the same time, you need to be careful not to set your child up for failure as this can harm their self-confidence. Although imagination is amazing and shouldn’t be suppressed, it is important to be realistic and make sure goals are in reach.
Unconditional love
Make it 100% clear that your love is unconditional.
It is great to aim high and set goals for the future but at the same time if these are not achieved it is not the end of the world.
Make sure they know that they will always have their friends and family’s love and support no matter what happens.
